Functional Behavioural Assessment

Behaviour Support Assessment

The Functional Behavioural Assessment is a method of identifying the causes of behaviour. It can be used to determine whether a child or adult’s behaviour is a reaction to their environment or if it has been caused by an underlying mental health condition.

This assessment will allow the practitioners to understand the cause of the individual’s behaviour and what they need to interact with the community. By doing this, the practitioners guide them to manage their symptoms more effectively and prevent any challenges in future.

The features of functional behavioural assessment are:

  1. It focuses on the relationship between environmental factors, behaviour and mental health conditions.
  2. It provides useful information about why someone has certain behaviours rather than just providing descriptions of them or using labels such as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
  3. It allows for an individualized approach which means each person will receive treatment based on their specific needs instead of receiving one size fits all treatments that may not work for everyone!
